Without being an expert on this area - Most of the times you'll find that hosts are using PHP Safe Mode in shared environments where you'll get a slice of most likely a VPS, so that clients can't reach each other internally on the server - so yes, Safe Mode is a safety mechanism that is typical for cheaper hosts - otherwise you'd be able to change it yourself.

Nej de fleste webhosts køre stadig ikke php 5.4, og mange køre stadig php 5.2 af div (gode) grunde. Så jeg vil ikke sige de køre på en gammel version af PHP.

what is it with this?

Can someone please explain in technical terms why someone like "meebox", Hostgator, Bluehost, dreamhost, don't have this,

yet others like "maxiweb" "cliche" have it and it creates all kinds of problems with WordPress…

Does that mean that the cheaper hosts that have Safe_mode "on" are safer than the more professional Bigger named hosts?
